Digital Decoration Is Evolving: Introducing UV Dimensional Patches

As decoration technology continues to evolve, brands have more ways to create custom apparel, accessories, promotional products, and branded merchandise. From traditional DTF to UV DTF and now UV Dimensional Patches, each technology offers a different way to bring artwork to life.


We’re excited to introduce UV Dimensional Patches, a newer decoration technology that combines digital artwork with texture, dimensional elements, and specialty finishes. Designed for applications such as hats, jackets, backpacks, and bags, these patches offer a modern alternative to traditional patch construction.


A New Take on the Traditional Patch


Traditional patches come with inherent limitations. Embroidery is built from thread and stitches, while woven and printed patches rely on specific materials, borders, and construction methods.


UV Dimensional Patches take a different approach.


Because the patch is digitally produced, the artwork can be created in virtually any shape and size, rather than being confined to a standard patch silhouette. Dimensional elements and specialty textures can also be incorporated into the design to create a more tactile, premium decoration.


This makes it possible to create patches that follow the actual shape of a logo or graphic instead of forcing the artwork into a traditional patch format.


Depending on the design, finishes can create the appearance of materials such as leather, denim, carbon fiber, wood, or metallic surfaces, while raised elements add another level of visual depth.


Three Digital Decoration Technologies


While DTF, UV DTF, and UV Dimensional Patches all use digital production methods, they are designed for different applications.


Traditional DTF


Direct-to-Film (DTF) is primarily an apparel decoration process.


Artwork is printed onto a specialized film using water-based pigment inks. Adhesive powder is applied and cured before the transfer is heat pressed onto fabric.


DTF is a great choice for:

  • T-shirts

  • Hoodies

  • Sweatshirts

  • Jerseys

  • Tote bags

  • Uniforms

  • Other compatible fabrics


Its biggest advantage is the ability to produce full color, highly detailed artwork without traditional screen print setup.


UV DTF


UV DTF uses a completely different production process from traditional DTF.


Instead of printing with water-based pigment inks and using heat activated adhesive powder, UV DTF uses UV curable inks that are cured during production.


The finished transfer is applied directly to compatible hard surfaces using an adhesive layer.


UV DTF is commonly used for:

  • Tumblers

  • Cups

  • Glass

  • Acrylic

  • Metal

  • Plastic

  • Other compatible hard goods


UV Dimensional Patches


UV Dimensional Patches are designed for applications where you want something more tactile and dimensional than a traditional transfer.


Instead of creating a flat graphic, the process produces a physical patch that can incorporate custom shapes, textures, raised elements, and specialty finishes.


They are particularly well suited for:

  • Hats
